Current events and Kempenfest notes

Hope everyone is enjoying this unbelievable summer…Council is most of the way through our summer recess and will meet again August 13th.

A few notes on current issues:

Ward 8 – Yesterday was a sombre day around city hall, following the resignation of Jennifer Robinson for health reasons.  She was a constant force for positive changes and is a warm and caring person, and we will all miss her a great deal.  Much more could be said about her contributions, much of which I said in our statement yesterday which can be found here.

MacLean Engineering – we are welcoming a major new industrial employer to Barrie.  MacLean Engineering makes heavy mining equipment.  They have purchased the former Faurecia Auto Plant on Bayview Drive.   This represents a substantial number of new industrial jobs in Barrie, many of which they are looking to fill through a job fair being held on Saturday, August 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Holly Community Centre.  Great news for Barrie.

Kempenfest – this is the biggest festival of the season in Barrie – more than 400 vendors, 7 food pavilions, main stage concert with April Wine…and much more.  Two things:  First, PLEASE leave your dog at home.  Your dog does not want to go to Kempenfest, trust me.  And it’s going to be very, very hot.  Second – there are lots of options to park elsewhere and shuttle to the waterfront.  Parking can be very difficult, so try the park and ride from Bayfield Mall and Allandale Rec Centre, or better yet take Barrie Transit or walk or bike down.  And if you’re reading this in the GTA – two GO trains a day will take you right to the middle of the action at the Allandale Waterfront Station.  GO is free this Sunday.  Congrats to Kempenfest organizers on everything they have done to make this year the best yet.

Have a great long weekend everyone, stay safe and enjoy life in the City by the Bay.
